Community Spirit Shines as Thrissur Pooram Prepares Amid Challenges

Thrissur: The air in Thrissur is thick with anticipation and uncertainty as preparations for the renowned Thrissur Pooram face obstacles regarding the traditional parade of elephants.

Flags were ceremoniously hoisted on Saturday at Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu temples, alongside eight minor participating temples, marking the beginning of festivities leading up to the Pooram on April 19. However, amidst the fanfare, concerns emerged over the feasibility of the elephant parade—a beloved highlight of the event.

A circular issued by the chief wildlife warden introduced stringent guidelines for elephant parades during festivals. These precautions included maintaining a minimum distance of 50 meters between elephants and melams (percussion ensembles) or fireworks displays, and ensuring that people remain at least 3 meters away from the majestic creatures.

These directives were met with disapproval from associations representing elephant owners, mahouts, and festival organizers, who deemed several measures impractical. Despite government assurances to address the concerns and potentially withdraw the circular, clarity on the matter remains elusive.

P.S. Raveendranath, the general secretary of the Kerala Elephant Owners’ Federation, emphasized that unless the circular is formally rescinded, elephant owners are hesitant to commit their elephants to the festivities.

“We would review the decision if the government submits an affidavit in the high court withdrawing the circular,” stated Raveendranath, underscoring the need for concrete action.

As the iconic Thrissur Pooram draws nearer, the fate of the cherished elephant parade hangs in the balance, awaiting resolution from the authorities.
