Heavy Rain in Kerala: Red Alert in Two Districts Today

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is bracing for continued heavy rainfall in the upcoming days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD’s forecast indicates that the state will experience very heavy rain on Wednesday. The downpour that started on Tuesday night in Thiruvananthapuram and other districts has persisted into Wednesday morning.

In Thiruvananthapuram, the heavy rains have caused trees to be uprooted in areas such as Thycaud and Poojappura. These fallen trees, which obstructed traffic, were promptly removed by Fire and Rescue Services personnel.

Authorities have issued a red alert for rain in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts for Wednesday. An orange alert has been issued for eight other districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram. The remaining four districts are under a yellow alert.

In addition to the heavy rainfall, the IMD has forecast high waves along the Kerala coast, leading to the continuation of the previously announced ban on fishing for Wednesday.

The IMD has also reported that a low-pressure area is likely to form in the southwestern region of the Bay of Bengal within the next few hours, which could develop into a deep depression.

Furthermore, the authorities have extended the ban on night travel in the hilly areas of Kottayam district and along the Erattupetta-Vagamon road. The Kottayam District Collector has advised that people needing to travel in these areas at night for emergency purposes should obtain prior permission from the respective police stations.
