Supreme Court: Advocates Seek Relief from Traditional Black Coats and Gowns Amid Sweltering Summers

During the summer season, advocates are now exempt from wearing gowns as per a resolution passed by the Kerala High Court.

The Full Court resolved to:

i) Permit the Advocates appearing in the Courts in the District Judiciary to wear a white shirt with band, by making the use of black coat and the Advocate’s Gown optional.

ii) For the Advocates appearing in the High Court, wearing of Gown will be optional.

The Kerala High Court Advocates Association made a request to dispense with the wearing of gowns due to the oppressive summer heat and the challenges encountered by advocates statewide. In response, the Kerala High Court passed a resolution considering this request.

The direction will be in force till May 31, 2024.
